Defence Cyber Training Environment

Problem

A critical Defence cyber training environment was preparing for an international exercise where failure was not an option. The network underpinning the environment was assessed as high-to-extreme risk, with architecture that was not fit-for-purpose or compliant with security requirements. Multiple stakeholders across Defence branches and Five Eyes partners needed assurance that the system could be safely relied upon for training operations.

Solution

Calexi staff were engaged to lead a rapid redesign and remediation. We:

• Conducted a fast-tracked risk assessment to remove unnecessary work and focus on priority issues.
• Implemented practical short-term mitigations while embedding a longer-term remediation roadmap.
• Codified actions and baselines to demonstrate measurable improvements.
• Communicated transparently with internal and international stakeholders to set realistic expectations.

This approach balanced urgent operational needs with compliance obligations, ensuring progress was auditable and sustainable.

Results

The environment supported the successful completion of the multinational exercise. Risks were reduced from extreme to high immediately, and to medium over the longer term. Compliance uplift was measurable, with more than a 30% increase in Essential Eight alignment and significantly improved ISM documentation. Stakeholders gained confidence that the environment could continue to support future training activities.
